There's something about the smell

The second you walk into a good Italian deli, it floods over you, a slightly tangy whiff ... from the cheese, I'd guess.

Whatever it is, Di Pasquale's of Highlandtown definitely has it. The sign says Di Pasquale's has been in business since 1914, and I can see why. The place is packed with a good selection of Italian food, wine and, it turned out, terrific deli offerings.

While we waited, we listened to Italian pop music and checked out the 10 different kinds of olives and the boccie trophy on the counter. There's also a good-sized seating area where you can wait for your order.

The Real Italian sandwich came loaded with a thick slab of Italian cold cuts, flavorful provolone and the usual Italian sandwich fixings, including grated cheese and hot peppers -- all on a fresh roll. Excellent.

The Italian sausage sandwich featured slightly sweet homemade sausage, with sweet red and yellow peppers and onions. It, too, was a winner.

And the insalata pescara included marinated calamari slices, tasty smoked salmon, capers and red onion slices over romaine lettuce.
The salad came with a basic oil-and-vinegar dressing and a nice piece of focaccia.

Finally, we were pleasantly surprised with the pizza Americana, a simple but delicious thin-crust concoction using fresh mozzarella and tasty tomato sauce.

For dessert, we enjoyed a cannoli, which was sweet and altogether first-rate.

Di Pasquale's sits a couple of blocks north of Eastern Avenue in the heart of Highlandtown. Parking is on-street but a space seemed easy enough to find.
