Summer Wines

Stop in and pick up a bottle of these great summer wines! Or, try something from our extensive selection.

Salvano Gavi 2010 – This wine from the southern Piedmont region has a straw, yellow color, a soft but persistent bouquet, and a fresh and agreeable taste. It’s an excellent aperitif and compliments courses with fish. $14.99

Hofstätter Pinot Grigio 2010 – This is a classic and very expressive Pinot Grigio, with a bright straw yellow in color and an attractive aroma of citrus fruits, peach, honeydew melon and especially pear; medium rich, fruity, well-structured and direct on the palate with orchard fruit flavors and tangy, fruity acidity on the finish. It pairs well with dishes based on egg, fish appetizers, and vegetable soups. $18.99

Even if you're not one to celebrate Easter, perhaps you'll make the Italian Easter Monday tradition of enjoying a picnic with family and friends a part of your Spring celebration.

A Visit to Italy

With the fast pace of American society, we are rarely ever able to stay in contact with the people who matter most. Being in Italy made me realize that isn't the case here.

In the little town of Broccostella, everyone knows everyone. Every night my cousins go out with their friends not to raging parties, but just to sit in a cafe and share a few laughs.

In Italy, bars are a place for friends. Families too go to have fun and sit with friends. During the summer children walk into bars with their friends and get ice cream, cakes, and other things like that. Its an escape everyone can enjoy.

These are the people who will be here for us.

Panettone

What would Christmas time be without Panettone? It's the manna of holiday treats – you can have it for dessert, for breakfast, for a snack... you can even make french toast with it. It goes well with espresso or our favorite: a glass of delicate sparkling wine.

Festa dei Sette Pesci

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a beloved Italian-American tradition for Christmas Eve. There's lots to enjoy – especially the many courses of frutti di mare. Though this meal may have its roots in abstinence, we just can't keep ourselves from the finer things in life: family means lots to eat.

Like most, this meal is often served with homemade wine, but there's also an opportunity to open the palate to something else... Perhaps a special wine that decidedly pairs with seafood:

Sure, the lobster on the front gives us more than a hint, but the taste affirms it. This will certainly be on our table for this special holiday.

Holiday Wines

As the holidays approach, we love to pick a few go-to wines for easy drinking – you know the kind: the tables wines that go with almost anything. Each week before New Year's Day, we'll be sharing with you the wines we choose for the holidays. Today, we want to tell you about the Prugnolo Gentile grape. Sounds different, but is also familiar. As Montepulciano's version of Sangiovese, its cousins often get all the attention, however this year we're enjoying this little gem:

2008 Corte alla Flora Podere Del Giuggiolo

This well-rounded wine is earthy but not overwhelming – but it's the fresh finish with cherry undertones that really makes it stand out. Even the ruby color adds to the holiday spirit. What's not to love?

The perfect espresso

espresso at Di Pasquale's

espresso crema

In spite of the proliferation of coffee shops and espresso machines there are still few places where you can get a proper espresso. A few times a week I stop into Di Pasquale's where they take barista skills seriously. This morning I talked to Joe Di Pasquale to find out why all espressos are not alike.

DS: What beans do you use?

JD: Illy.

DS: Just like the use in Italy. What are the important techniques in creating the perfect espresso?

JD: Start with a clean beginning without residue from the previous coffee and give a little twist when packing the grind to create the crema. The biggest mistake is running the machine too long. You want a nice the crema on top.

And there you have it, a classic espresso or simply "cafe" to the rest of the world. Joe admired swirls of crema for a while before he put the cup on a saucer and slid a cookie beside it. It doesn't get much better than this.
